This 2021 Bayeux War Correspondent Award photo competition when all tuned up in unison

Photo 11 was taken at Genting Rempah in Malaysia by Modh Rasfan and it is the one 15-year-olds throughout Europe chose to pick out in their vote this October for the best photo in the Bayeux War Correspondent Award competition.
Two of our pupils Camille Da Costa and Savanah Popoff from 3A and 3C also happened to write their articles about it, which were then selected by their respective class friends.
Here are their reflections on it for you to discover and no doubt enjoy.

Camille Da Costa wrote :
« I find this photograph very cute and funny but also conscience-stirring because this situation is really mind-boggling.
In the foreground, you can see two monkeys. They are handling a face mask. It looks as though the monkey on the left is older than the monkey on the right. Maybe they are father and son.
They are on a block, on something unnatural and man-made which is opposed to their natual environment. But the block isn’t the only man-made object because there is the face mask too. In the background, you can see some green vegetation. Maybe it is in the jungle.
The face mask is a different type of pollution because it is a sign of the times and it is a new object that people necessarily use everyday. I think this photo shows the impact of humans on the planet.
In my opinion this photo was taken for people to react. The photographer wants to make a difference and he wants to help the planet and animals by making this picture public and he is right because this situation is horrible totally dangerous for the monkeys. Maybe after the photographer took this picture, the monkeys ate this face mask ! It is totally dangerous for them !
One of the benefits of a photographer’s job is that he can show many problems by taking and publishing pictures for people to react.
We have to react because it is our fault and also because this photograph is probably not a one-off shot and this situation is probably quite frequent.
We have to react quickly because if we don’t react now, maybe nature will be destroyed together with animals. »

In addition to it, Savanah Popoff also commented :
« I find this photograph unusual, shocking and informative. In the middle of the picture there are two monkeys, a baby monkey on the right and a big monkey on the left. The baby monkey is holding the thread of a mask and the two monkeys are having fun with it. Those monkeys are looking at the camera and behind them there is a lot of vegetation like bushes, trees and leaves. The mask was thrown to the ground by a tourist and the monkeys found it.
This photo is unusual because it is not a common sight.
It is shocking because it shows that because of coronavirus and humans and masks, there is pollution everywhere, even in nature.
And this photo is also informative because it shows that pollution caused by humans has an impact on animals. »
