Rédaction d’articles en anglais inspirés par deux photos au prix Bayeux 2018

For the second consecutive year, our pupils from 3e have had a chance to express themselves in writing on the photo of their choice out of the War Correspondent Award selection in competition at Bayeux from the 8th to the 14th of October, 2018 and as part of the « Regards des jeunes de 15 ans ». This project - which has recently become accessible to other EU countries - enables young people to submit their views and vote for the AFP shot which has best symbolized international news over the last 12 months.
Here are the two articles chosen by the pupils of 3B and 3C to appear on our site.

This photo was taken by Noel Celis on 17 January, 2018 in Manille in an environmental context.
On the left-hand side we can see houses made with pieces of cardboard. In the middle of the photograph, there are three people on a bridge. Under the bridge there is a river of waste and in the background, there are some more houses.
The people look as though they live in extremely difficult conditions, and yet they look healthy !
I find this photo really striking and frightening because the people have to live in houses built with inappropriate materials like pieces of cardboard. The city is full of garbage. The river does not even have water anymore. It is filled with rubbish.
How can people be allowed to live in such conditions ?
I think they do not live but survive.

Now let us continue on with the article produced by Angélina Alfonso, from 3C.

To my mind, that is a particularly striking and mesmerizing photograph because it is unusual to see a seagull with a cigarette in its beak. It looks like the seagull is smoking, but of course it is not the case. It shows that the human world affects the animal world by smoking and doing a lot of other bad things.
It is a close up of the seagull, it is staring at us. I find it very provocative because to me, it looks as though it would tell us : « Look how I am now ! It is your fault ! You must stop it now, please ! »
A lot of animals’ lives are in danger and it is our fault. So, we should take care of nature. If we do it together, we can make a better world for this seagull and a lot of other animals. We should save them.
Well, let us get back to the photograph ! In the foreground, we can see the seagull with the cigarette in its beak and in the background, there is something which looks like the sea. That is probably where the seagull lives.
There are not a lot of colours on the photo. There is white on the seagull and a lot of blue behind its body - it is very probably the sky.
These are all my feelings about this photo which is at the same time beautiful and disturbing.
Do not forget ! We must take care of nature and all the animals will be happier where they live.
