Lauréats des meilleurs articles en anglais portant sur quelques photos concourant au prix Bayeux.

« Regard de jeunes de 15 ans » is a national project asking young people to select the photo which best represents today’s world in their eyes out of the Prix Bayeux 2017 selection.
It also gave rise to the writing of articles in English by our pupils of 3A and 3B. Morgane Maugard and Yrsa Van Den Oord have had their articles selected by their peers to be published on the school site. Congratulations to them both !

Additionally, we will display the work of an Italian pupil Albachiara Varesano class 3D whose school Istituto Comprensivo Battisti-Giovanni XXIII, Corato joined us on this project under the supervision of their teacher Mrs Fiorella Menduni. Our thanks to them for their excellent contribution !

This AFP 12/ Iraq photograph was taken by Odd Anderson and was voted for by our 3A class as part of the "Regard des jeunes de 15 ans" project.

And it is Morgane Maugard who was designated by her class to have her article about it published on the school site.

I find this photograph really moving because the woman didn’t leave the little cat behind but she has taken her cat with her, in spite of the fighting in Iraq. The woman loves this cat. Its name is Lulu.

Mosul is extensively destroyed, that’s why the woman has fled her home. She and her family have taken refuge at a camp in Arbil. The woman is wearing a black burka from tip to toe. This burka cloth is totally black and she carries a bag and in this bag is Lulu the white cat ! In the background, the rest of the world is totally blurred. It’s very meaningful because in the world there are wars and terrorist attacks. The landscape was totally broken up - there are no buildings, no houses.

The photo to me is natural and unnatural at the same time - it’s wierd ! It’s particularly conscience-stirring because my environment is very cool. I have a home and I am able to go to school, but the people of Iraq don’t have that. My life is very simple compared to their lives. Their lives are very difficult because there is no water, no electricity. it’s very hard and I couldn’t live in these conditions.
I would like the fighting to stop now !

Morgane Maugard, 3A, Collège Louis Pergaud.

Yrsa Van Den Oord ’s article was retained by her class on the photo of her choice.

I chose photograph AFP 16/ France.

I find this photograph really shocking and mind-boggling because we can see a fire destroying slums, the only living place of many migrants.
The migrants must flee their country because they are persecuted. They came to France because they hope they will find work and give their children better living conditions. They did not come here to be persecuted again.
This photograph was taken on October 26, 2016 in Calais. Philippe Hugen is the photographer.

In the foreground, we can see worried migrants, behind them, there are burning slums. The sky is full of black smoke.
There is a sharp contrast between the sky and the slums.
I know that these people would like to go to England to find work. They must hide under trucks to go to England. It’s very dangerous. I don’t understand why they didn’t find work in France.
6,000 to 8,000 migrants lived in the "Jungle" of Calais.

However, the photo voted in by class 3B originally was AFP 10/ Venezuela/Juan Barreto

And to finish off on a lighter note,

People take part at the 15th Annual Yoga Event in Time Square.
They also celebrate the summer solstice.
This photo is significant. These people are very brave : they are doing yoga in the traffic surrounded by smog and cars.
Interior peace is important for them and they want to say to the world :
“Enjoy and live without stress and trouble”.
Contemporary society is always in a state of anxiety and this causes illness and sadness.
So yoga exercises help our mind to be in harmony and we can live better with ourselves and with other people.
